"He's in there!" Geary said, pulling Jan towards the fountain. Upon seeing the little kid in the water (having no way of knowing that he was perfectly alright), Jan pulled him out quickly and with his thumb pushed one of his eyelids up. Jan furrowed his brow in confusion. For all the time that the kid was in the water, he should've been dead, but his pupils weren't dialated.

oh, Jan's a doctor Runi thought. That's right, I'll need to fool him too He concentrated on his heartbeat and started slowing it down and making it weaker, using his power rather than blood to move things around his body.

I don't know why he's doing this, but Jan sees right through him Kitai thought as she watched the scene. She decided that it would probably be wise to move on from the scene or adopt a horror-struck expression. Jan would be on her back until she could explain if he saw her dealing with a kid's death like it was nothing.

((Just so you know, Jan's not above giving mouth to mouth to a little kid. XD))

"Syn, fetch a twig and light it on fire," Jan said quickly. Syn knew better than to argue in this kind of situation and ran off to complete the task. Jan pressed his middle and index finger against the vein in Runis neck, then also applied pressure to his wrist as well, checking for a pulse. There was one present, but it was rather faint. Syn returned with his manually made fire twig and handed it off to Jan.

He lifted Runis eyelid once more. The pupil was wider, since it was dark out. When he shined the light in front of the childs eyes, the pupil shrunk, to accomidate the new light. His face was neither pale, nor red, there were no signs of shock. He had a pulse, his pupils responded to light, no symptoms of hypothermia were present. By all means, this kid should be fine.

((And Runi is very thankful for that XD))

When Jan held the light close to Runi's eyes, he reflexively blinked, immediately regretting his mistake. If that wasn't a surefire clue that I'm alive and well, I don't know what is. He sighed and spit out the water he was holding in his lungs, taking in air instead. Breathing wasn't necessary, but it felt right to have something inside him. Then he rolled over and sat up, keeping his gaze down and not looking at Geary.

Jan sighed and blew the fire out, glad that the kid was alright. "Ruuuniii!!" Geary yelled, running up to the boy. "Don't you scare me like that you silly head!"

"What in the world were you doing in there?" Jan asked, running a hand through his hair. "Did you trip or something?"

"He actually goes in there quite often." Kitai said. "People just usually don't see him."

Runi hugged his knees to his chest and looked away from the girl. "Tory's right, you shouldn't be around me." he said. "She got hurt when we were trying to go back to the village and I took us to the oasis."

Jan raised an eyebrow in confusion when Runi mentioned the oasis. "Hurt?" Tory echoed. "I don't really call a tumble and some sand in my mouth hurt." Frankly, she was just glad that her hair had stayed on. Syn wondered if Runis father was really Akaelin and not Set. The kid seemed to have some angst in him for such a young age.

"You could've gotten hurt." Runi said. "Things around me get hurt sometimes, and sometimes I can't control it. I just wanted a friend, but I understand if you don't want to be around me too. I didn't ask to be what I am and if someone did give me a choice I'd choose to be mortal."

While Jan had a million and a half questions running through his mind all at once, he decided to wait until another time. "At least you're not dying, you could think of it that way," the older girl replied bitterly. "Tory!" Jan snapped, wanting to smack the ocelot on the head. "It's nothing personal Runi, but I'm not out to make friends. It's better if I don't," she continued, ignoring her father.

Anger filled Runi. The kid he thought he could be friends with was just the same as the rest of them: looking down on him because of what he was and who his parents were. "Good," he responded in a calm voice. "That means you're listening to me." His face didn't show any signs of his anger, but a small crack suddenly appeared running up the fountain.

"I don't think you understand Runi," Tory replied after a quick glance at the crack in the fountain. It had frightened her, of course, but right now she needed to make the kid get the picture. "I don't want friends with eh-nee-boh-dee. Not just you. I wouldn't care if you had long claws and purple skin, or were completely 100% normal. It wouldn't make a difference, and it doesn't change the fact that I'm not going to be in this world for as long as I'd like."

Jan swore silently to himself and stood up. Torys blood pressure was probably rising, which wasn't a good thing for her. "Come on Tory. You're tired and we're going home for tonight. We'll discuss all this in the morning."

Runi's anger faded as he grasped the meaning of those words. Tory.....is dying? The crack in the fountain immediately stopped its advance and new stone began to heal over it. He almost reacted with an attack as he felt something touch him from behind, but it just turned out to be Kitai. "You should get some rest to Runi." She said gently. "Mental rest if not physical rest. Then you should talk to your mother in the morning."

Runi nodded and slipped back into the fountain, once again sinking to the bottom. The fountain wasn't just the place he went when he was depressed. Many spiritualists also entered a state of prolonged submersion in water to reach a semi-conscious state of meditation. It was into this state that he often retreated to as a defense.

Jan lifted Geary, who seemed to be on the verge of crying again, to her feet, then grabbed Torys hand and led her out of the town. "You shouldn't have said that," he mumbled absentmindedly. "Now people are going to start asking questions." Tory didn't really know what to say. "It was the only way to get him to understand. He's so thick skulled."

"No, you're just too smart for your own good," Jan replied. "You can stay with me for tonight, whether your mother is still there or not."

((sure))

Kitai came out in the morning and found Runi still lying in the fountain, trapped in his bodiless trance. It was the closest thing to true sleep that gods could get and she hoped that it had healed his body from the wounds it recieved the night he accompanied Ra. She reached an arm into the fountain and gently shook the small boy, who opened his eyed immediately. Even though he was surrounded by water, she could tell by the look on his face that he had been crying.
"Kitai, why is Tory dying?" Runi asked the werewolf. "She's not old."

"People aren't always old when they die." Kitai said. "Sometimes nature chooses to claim one back that is younger. As for the cause, I dont know. You'll have to ask Jan."

Tory awoke early the next morning, the sunlight streaming through her window. She lept out of bed quickly and ran into the next room, where Geary was still sleeping. She knew exactly where she would find her father. She went down two flights of stairs, and into his study. He was sitting at an oak wood desk, his upper body slumped across a pile of open books. His eyes fluttered open when he heard the door open. Sitting up straight, he removed his glasses and cleaned them with the edge of his sleeve, then put them back on.

"I suppose we owe some people some explanations," he sighed, stretching.

----------------------------------------------------------------

After cleaning themselves up and leaving a note for Geary (whom they had left behind with Kieran), the two meandered down the mountain half heartedly. The subject they would have to explain wasn't in any way pleasant, but they figured that it would be best to get the questions out of the way as soon as possible.

"I'm going to go ask" Runi said. He picked up Jan's scent, but it was closer than it should have been. The young god took to the trees again so he could watch the two unnoticed.

"So what are you going to tell them?" Tory asked, and Jan rolled his eyes. "You should have to do all the explaining for letting the cat out of the bag." Tory looked up at her father with admirition in her eyes. He was so much closer to his untimely death, and yet he seemed to handle it so much better than she did. Maybe it was because he had had a lot longer to get used to the idea of dying early.

So she really is dying Runi thought. He ran through his mind, trying to recall some way he might be able to help her, but all that was coming up were stories of gods that had tried to save mortals. Not many of them ended happily, and those were with gods that fully understood and were in complete control of their power.

Jan entered the village with an almost tired expression on his face. Tory fidgeted, looking around for anyone that might be staring at her, because they had somehow heard what she said last night.

((I just barely woke up in time XD Land of the Lost put me to sleep))

Runi crouched in the last tree before the village began and made a leap to the nearest roof. He bounded away from roof to roof until he reached the fountain again. Tory would probably be angry if she found out that he had been following them.

Jan met Runi at the fountain, resting his hand on Torys shoulder. "I suppose you're curious about exactly what Tory was talking about last night," he said to the kid. "Ask any questions you like, but keep in mind that I have a few questions for you. Whether you answer them or not is up to you, and whether we answer your questions is up to us."

Runi nodded. "I'll answer any of your questions. Though I wouldn't even need to answer them if you stuck closer to town." He mentally corrected himself. He would answer any question but one. He promised himself he would never tell anyone about the night he was on Apep duty other than Set. "So I'll ask one. Why is Tory dying?"

"There's really no need for me to be down here when my house is pefectly in tact," Jan replied to Runis comment about him not living close to the town.

"So, about Torys condition," Jan said hesitantly. He really didn't like to say flat out that she was dying, even though they both knew it. "It's some kind of disease that runs on my mothers side of the family. I have it, and I passed it on to Tory. Whether or not Geary has it as well, we're not sure. The average life span on my mothers side is about 30, and that's unmedicated. With medication, we're not sure how long either of us will live. It does help, but provides some complications as well."

"So if you stop aging then the disease stops working?" Runi asked. "Is there any way to cure it? What causes it?" If he found some way to save Tory then maybe she'd be his friend after all.

"Okay, answer to first question, No," Jan replied. "It's something that happens over a period of time. Around 30 years just happens to be that time. Answer to second, not completely. Spac provides a kind of medication, but like I said it has some complications. Not taking it on time is a pain, and it made our hair fall out. Answer to third question, I don't know. No one really does. All I know is that it's genetic."

Tory began to fidget again, twirling the strands of her fake hair around her index finger. Jans looked a little bit more natural on him, but her's just looked a bit too thick.
